I landed in Reno, NV quite by accident. Before we moved here, all I knew about Reno was that Johnny Cash “shot a man in Reno just to watch him die” and there was gambling there. I left Minneapolis, MN for my “dream job” which soon turned into a nightmare. After abruptly parting ways with my employer, I had some tough decisions to make. Should I stay or should I go? My husband and I made some big sacrifices leaving our family and friends in Minnesota. But, what we found in Reno, NV was totally unexpected. We decided to stay. After the “dream job” fiasco, I was fortunate enough to land a job where I work from home. I could literally live anywhere in the world and work from home. I chose Reno.
There’s much more than smoky casinos here in Reno, NV. In fact, most of the casinos aren’t smoky at all. They are staffed with friendly people and they cater to locals. Who doesn’t love a buffet for less than ten bucks? And they bring tons of entertainment opportunities. We’ve seen more concerts here than we did in a decade back in Minnesota. But, for me, that’s only part of the charm of living in this Biggest Little City. It’s the outdoors that I truly love.
When I first arrived I missed the green foliage of Minnesota so much. Soon, my husband and I discovered that we could drive 30 minutes in any direction and experience different scenery. It could be driving North towards Pyramid Lake, South to Carson City, or West to Lake Tahoe. Even going downtown Reno near the Arch to hang out at the Truckee River can be fun. And there are festivals every weekend!
Meeting new friends was never a challenge because everyone here is from somewhere else. The people in Reno are like no other. And it’s such a fitness focused community. And these fitness oriented people in this region really captured my heart. I’m one of those people who requires motivation from others. I feel lucky. Big jackpot lucky! Fitness is something this region embraces. There are endless opportunities for experiencing the outdoors. I’m a joiner. After some searching, I joined the R5K Racing Team, Endurance Reno, and then Pyramid CrossFit & Conditioning.
Running the local races is so much fun and people are so encouraging. After three years living in Reno I get that feeling that everybody knows my name in this Biggest Little City. And that’s the kind of community of caring I am proud to be a part of. I just love this Biggest Little City, not just for what the city offers, but for the people that comprise it. Today I’m feeling like I hit the jackpot!
